Lena Waithe, Louis Gossett, Jr. to be honored by ABFF

The 2020 American Black Film Festival Honors will celebrate filmmaker Lena Waithe and actor Louis Gossett Jr. for their achievements in film and television.

Waithe, who recently wrote the acclaimed film Queen & Slim, receives the Industry Renaissance Award, while Gossett Jr. receives the Hollywood Legacy Award.

In a statement, Jeff Friday, CEO of ABFF Ventures, called the couple “two exceptional talents”.

“These awards recognize not only how Mr. Gossett’s contributions have advanced the industry, but also a new generation of pioneers among people like Ms. Waithe who will continue to create changes and new opportunities in film and television for people with color.” he continued.

Presented by ABFF Ventures, the 2020 ABFF Honors will be hosted by comedian and actor Deon Cole on February 23 in Los Angeles.

The event will also celebrate the best entertainment in black with films like Dolemite Is My Name, Harriet, Just Mercy and more.

Fans can currently get into the fun by voting for the film of the year.
