Flybe: Britain's largest regional airline

It is reported that Britain’s largest regional airline, Flybe, is on the verge of collapse.

The operator is in last-minute negotiations to secure additional funds, according to Sky News.

The station reported that the airline was “locked in survival talks” to try to secure additional funds, and that the accountant firm EY is waiting to handle the possible administration of the Flybe Group.

An airline spokesman said: “Flybe continues to provide excellent service and connectivity to our customers while ensuring that they can continue traveling as planned.

“We do not comment on rumors or speculation.”

It is said that the Department of Transportation is involved in trying to keep the airline high and establish contingency plans. A government spokesman said: “We do not comment on the speculation or financial matters of private companies.”

The secretary general of the British Association of Airline Pilots (Balpa), Brian Strutton, said: “I am horrified that once again the future of a major airline in the United Kingdom and hundreds of jobs are discussed in secret without employee contributions. or their representatives.

“We demand that Flybe owners (Virgin, Stobart and Cyrus) and the government departments involved stop hiding and tell us about Flybe.

“We have the right to be consulted and the staff has the right to know what is happening.”

Flybe went on sale at the end of 2018, warning that it was running out of cash quickly.

The troubled carrier was rescued in March 2019 by a consortium composed of Virgin Atlantic, Stobart Group and a US hedge fund, Cyrus Capital.

The three bought Flybe for a nominal price of £ 2.8 million, but then pumped tens of millions of pounds to keep the airline afloat generating huge losses. The consortium, known as Connect Airways, said it had “plans to grow the regional Flybe network.”

The airline was said to be renamed Virgin Connect, with the route network adjusted to increase connectivity with Virgin Atlantic services from Heathrow and Manchester.

The new executive director, Mark Anderson, said last year: “I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity we have to build a solid platform in the UK.

“Our entire team focuses on redefining the experience for our customers, as we rediscover the excitement and passion of being the largest regional airline in Europe.”

A spokesman for Virgin Atlantic said: “We are not commenting on speculation.”

Flybe employs about 2,000 people. Conversations have begun to reduce the workforce before the brand change.

Flybe began his life in 1979 as Jersey European Airways. He became a British European in 2000, and changed his name back to Flybe two years later.

The airline is based in Exeter and operates almost 200 routes in the United Kingdom and Europe. Flybe operates the majority of domestic flights in the United Kingdom that do not start or end in London, with frequent links between Scottish and English airports, and many routes to and from George Best Belfast City.

Flybe also serves cities near Europe, such as Amsterdam, Dusseldorf and Paris. At a dozen airports in the United Kingdom, including Aberdeen, Belfast City, Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester and Southampton, operates the largest number of flights.

In September 2019, Thomas Cook collapsed with the loss of 9,000 jobs in the United Kingdom, including many who work for Thomas Cook Airlines.
