The WWE confirmed on Wednesday that wrestling legend Rocky “Soul Man” Johnson, who is also the father of actor and professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson, has died. He was 75 years old.
Born Wayde Douglas Bowles, he became a legend in the professional wrestling industry by founding The Soul Patrol with wrestler and bodybuilder Tony Atlas and becoming the first Black World Tag team champion in WWE history. In 2008 Rocky Johnson was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. And last month it was announced that Johnson had joined the board of the International Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Rocky Johnson also played a major role in the education of his son Dwayne.
In a homage to his father in 2018 on Father’s Day, Dwayne wrote: “Happy Father’s Day for this barely ever smiling OG ass. Little boys by nature look up to their old man and idolize him. They want to do just how they are what they do and are always looking for their approval. “
“Funny is the day I stopped looking for this permit, the day I understood what it meant to be a man and, more importantly, to be a father,” continued the tribute.
“This shift has led me to a new level of gratitude for the hard love he has always given. Years later, as the husband and father of three girls, I know that hard love is much better than no love at all. I accept it. It made me who I am today. Thankful for the original skirt. “
Although Dwayne understandably did not publicly express his grief, other members of the wrestling community paid tribute to the late Johnson.
Vince McMahon, Chairman and CEO of WWE, wrote on Twitter: “I am deeply saddened by the loss of Rocky Johnson, an incredible talent who has forged an indelible legacy. My thoughts are with @TheRock and his family. “
Triple H also called his death “a loss for every @ WWE fan”. On Twitter, he added: “Rocky Johnson was a pioneering performer. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.”
Nattie also went to Twitter and wrote, “It makes me sad to hear the news from Rocky Johnson who is dying. Rocky wrestled stampede wrestling for my grandfather Stu for many years. I send so much love to @TheRock and his whole family. “
